Starting with the second half of July 2008, the North-Eastern area of Romania is affected by a wave of disastrous flooding which has lead both to material damages and loss of human lives.
The abundant rains recorded in this period led to the rapid flooding of over 127 000 hectares of land and 8 500 households. Considering the material damages, the transport infrastructure was seriously affected, over 1000 km of roads and 1000 bridges being flooded. Also, the communications and water supply infrastructures were affected, as were the electric network and the hydro-technical constructions.
