Brussels Monday, 9th July 2012 - DIGITALEUROPE welcomes the announcement of €8.1bn Euro calls under FP7 by the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, today.

€1.5bn Euro of the total of this call is set to support the Digital Agenda’s ICT research funding targets. John Higgins CBE, Director General DIGITALEUROPE welcomes the allocation of direct investment in ICT: “Innovation will boost economic development. In ten years’ time I am confident that we bring to fruition advanced technologies creating European success stories as ICT becomes pervasive in all aspects of our lives.”

Higgins also points to the link between investment and job creation: “If we look back at the global success of GSM it becomes evident how critical publicly funded support was - today we have a worldwide mobile market of valued at €250bn Euro.”

Sustained funding enables pre-competitive developments of the next generation communication systems, such as 3G or 4G. Today’s ICT research is investigating possibilities beyond 4G laying the essential groundwork of future systems.

DIGITALEUROPE believes that latest set of FP7 calls, together with the Horizon 2020 framework programme (2014-2020) are central to European research and innovation.  SMEs will thrive in an ecosystem that is created based on ICT R&D technologies and they are an important source of jobs.

“The European Framework programmes provide an anchor of multi-annual support which is of particular importance in times of crisis when other funding sources dry up. Investment will help us achieve long term strategic goals and short term job creation,” concludes Higgins.

ENDs.
