Digital Agenda Global 5G standard ‘vital’ Huawei’s rallying call at FT-ETNO summit

Huawei’s Ryan Ding made the case for open collaboration to bring about a global 5G standard
Speaking at the FT-ETNO summit 2016 held in Brussels on 27 September, Mr Ding, Huawei’s Executive Director and Products & Solutions President, stressed that developing a common standard for 5G would require open cooperation between all regions and countries, including Europe, Asia and the Americas. He said that Europe could play a positive role in bringing about a single global standard for 5G.
Mr Ding insisted on the role of public policies in promoting cross-regional and cross-industry collaboration. He welcomed the EU’s open approach to developing the next generation of global communications and digitalisation standards, citing the EU-led 5G Private-Public Partnership (5G PPP) as an example. The initiative includes members from both Europe and other parts of the world, such as Huawei, NEC, NTT DOCOMO, Samsung and IBM. Similarly, more European companies are now involved in China's 5G and other related programmes.
Huawei is doing its part to support digital transformation in Europe, continuously growing its local R&D resources and cooperation. The company announced plans to invest more than €75 million by 2020 in support of European R&D. As part of the plan, Huawei will establish three open labs in the UK, Germany and Italy to support up to 100 000 European developers.
