The controversial draft Danish asylum law will be debate between MEPs and representatives of the Danish government in the European Parliament's civil liberties committee this afternoon at 15.00. Ahead of the debate, Green civil liberties and home affairs spokesperson Judith Sargentini said:

"Denmark's scandalous new draft asylum law has justifiably provoked widespread criticism as a very visible example of the race to the bottom across Europe, as regards the approach to refugees and asylum seekers. Beyond the draconian provisions to confiscate the property of refugees and asylum seekers arriving in Denmark, postponing family reunification for up to 3 years is really a new low. The EU cannot turn a blind eye, and today's debate is important in this regard, but we also expect a response from the European Commission."
