Thursday, 4 October 2012 – Brussels - Against the backdrop of the most recent round of discussions in the high-level EU mediation process facilitated by Mr Antonio Vitorino, DIGITALEUROPE today launches a paper on alternatives to the current device-based levy system.

“DIGITALEUROPE is calling for a public platform to launch a proper debate on alternatives. This will provide an opportunity for the widest range of stakeholders to discuss new and emerging concepts in this space. The intention of our paper is to articulate some initial ideas as a catalyst to start the debate,” explains John Higgins, Director General of DIGITALEUROPE.

“We welcome Mr Vitorino’s willingness to consider alternative models to device-based private copying levies within the mediation process. An alternative model would result in a positive step forward for European consumers who will be able to enjoy content in a wide array of legal offerings available in the digital age while ensuring that artists and creators are compensated for private copying in a fairer and more efficient way,” continues Mr Higgins.
