Copa and Cogeca welcomed in Brussels today the Swedish Presidencys’ initiative to set up an extra EU Farm Council meeting on October 5 and urge EU politicians to take rapid political decisions to help solve the unprecedented crisis facing EU dairy farmers.

In a letter sent to President of the Farm Council Eskil Erlandsson, Copa President Padraig Walshe warned “The crisis in the dairy sector is causing huge income losses for farmers, causing many dairy farmers to go bankrupt. We believe that the global EU losses could reach up to 10
billion euros. In view of this desperate situation, we urge EU politicians to agree on strong market measures to help improve the situation.” Cogeca President Gert Van Dijk added “We welcome the Swedish Presidencys’ initiative to arrange an extra Agriculture Council meeting on October 5.

The move should help to reinforce the credibility of the European Union in tackling the critical situation facing dairy farmers”.
