European Union leaders asked to drive digital, green and talent transitions

Global accountancy body ACCA is calling on prospective European Commissioners to focus on tackling key issues that face the European Union (EU).

As the Commissioners-designate attend hearings at the European Parliament before taking office, ACCA is setting out its policy recommendations for the EU for 2024-2029.

ACCA is urging the newly appointed Commissioners to ensure:

  • a fair transition towards a more sustainable future for both business and society;
  • minimum administrative burdens by EU Member States on cross-border recognition of education and professional qualifications;
  • the ethical and responsible use of technology including AI within a safe and transparent environment.

Fiona Murray, Head of EU Public Affairs, ACCA, said: ‘ACCA has identified three all-inclusive priorities, which we believe – if managed correctly – will support a sustainable future for all and enhance Europe’s global competitiveness. We are reminding the European Commission of the importance of these priorities as they take office.’

ACCA is also calling on the EU to give particular support to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) within the Union. Murray said: ‘We’re glad to see that the EU is looking to boost SMEs by simplifying legislation, reducing administrative burdens including reporting obligations by at least 35% and by focussing on this vital sector for the economy of the EU.’

ACCA has been in contact with all of the Commissioners-designate setting out the detail of how the key priorities for the EU of digital, green and talent transition can be tackled in individual portfolios.
