Coinciding with its 20th anniversary, the organisation renews its image

Madrid, February 18th, 2021 - Club de Madrid, the world's largest forum of democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers, commemorates 20 years working for democracy around the globe. Founded in 2001, the organisation leverages the unique leadership experience of all its Members to strengthen inclusive democratic practice and improve the well-being of people around the world.

In such a remarkable occasion, Club de Madrid continues to foster dialogue, build bridges and lead in advocacy efforts to strengthen public policies and effective leadership through policy recommendations that meet the aspirations of citizens and the ability of those called to deliver. In addition, it will continue working to promote the rule of law, social inclusion, sustainable development, peace and multistakeholder dialogue to better tackle today's and tomorrow's global challenges.

"Multilateral cooperation is now more important than ever and Club de Madrid Members are best suited to grab the attention of today's leaders, to discuss good governance and well- being of citizens around the world", explains Danilo Türk, President of Club de Madrid and former President of Slovenia.

20 years of global achievements

Throughout its history, Club de Madrid has addressed different challenges at both the national and global level. Among its contributions at the national level, we can highlight the support lent to democratic transition and consolidation in countries as varied as Bolivia, Timor Leste, Haiti, Kyrgyzstan or Tunisia amongst others. Its contribution to the improvement of the role of women in promoting peace and security in the Horn of Africa has also been significant.

At the global level, one of its most prominent achievements was the organisation of the Summit on "Democracy, Terrorism and Security", which took place following the 11th September attacks in the United States and the 2004 Madrid train bombings. It opened an international debate to seek a democratic and human rights approach in the fight against terrorism. The principles of the meeting were reflected by the United Nations and the United States Senate.

Its work on climate change was also of great importance as its recommendations on a post Kyoto climate change agreement were reflected in the Bali Roadmap in 2007. Several Club de Madrid Members have since been named UN Special Envoys for Climate Change.

Throughout 2020, the organisation has led a series of initiatives related to the COVID19 pandemic, urging G20 and European Union leaders to intensify global cooperation and quickly and effectively tackle its daunting health and socio-economic consequences. Following the principle of solidarity, the organisation continues to work to ensure that no country is left behind and that there is an equitable distribution of vaccines around the world, which is essential for overcoming the pandemic.

Coinciding with this anniversary, Club de Madrid is launching a renewed corporate image that merges the original logo with a much more current and modern brand identity. In this sense, the new corporate image will continue to reflect the core values and objectives of the organisation.

Club de Madrid strategic priority areas

"Our alliance represents an independent effort towards sustainable development, inclusion and peace, which is not linked to the interests or pressures of institutions and governments", highlights Laura Chinchilla, Vice President of Club de Madrid and former President of Costa Rica.

Club de Madrid focuses its activities on three fundamental strategic priority areas:

  • Shared Societies Project (SSP) provides leaders with greater understanding of the benefits of advancing social inclusion as an essential element in democratic development. Club de Madrid has been promoting shared societies for over 12 years; a society in which all individuals are equally important and equally free to express differences and actively participate, while integrating their voices within the population.
  • Next Generation Democracy (NGD) analyses trends affecting democratic development and proposes public policies to protect and strengthen the future of democracy. Human rights, inclusion, institutional resilience, responsible leadership, transparency, and accountability are essential pillars of the democracy that Club de Madrid aims to bolster and pursue.
  • Multilateralism and Global Cooperation (MGC) rallies consensus in the global community around an inclusive, rules-based and sustainable approach in addressing global challenges. Club de Madrid advocates for a strong multilateral system for the global community, one that creates a new momentum for multilateral solutions.
