"The EU needs to find political answers to the specific challenges that Atlantic regions are facing to enable a dynamic and balanced development of these territories."

Yesterday, the European Parliament debated a Resolution initiated by Alain Cadec MEP asking for a European strategy for the Atlantic region. The aim of this strategy is to take better account of the specificities of Atlantic territories through a European action plan.

"Atlantic regions are maritime regions, therefore the maritime aspect should be a priority. But the territorial aspect is also very important, that's why it is necessary to encourage the territorial development of these regions and to strengthen their connection with other EU regions", explained Alain Cadec.

The EP Resolution sets the strategy's priorities, especially the integration of transport networks, marine energies, protection of the environment, innovation, fisheries competitiveness and sustainability, etc.

"This strategy will have to strengthen the North-South connection of Atlantic coasts, in particular with the 'motorways of the sea' from Andalusia to Scotland. It should also develop East-West transport infrastructures, like high speed train lines."

The Resolution asks the Commission to come up with an action plan transforming these priorities into concrete actions as soon as possible and to coordinate their implementation with post-2013 EU policies.

The vote on the Resolution will take place on Wednesday 9 March at 11.30 hrs.
