Today the European Parliament approved the draft resolution on the opening of negotiations for an EU-Tunisia Free Trade Agreement. ALDE supports the agreement as it will be beneficial for both parties and essential for the economic and political stability of Tunisia and the Maghreb region.

The Parliament’s message is simple. This is not only about free trade, but first and foremost it is a political agreement. We have the responsibility to stand by the Tunisians, to support their efforts to consolidate democracy but as well, through this agreement, to contribute to economic development, to growth and to employment in Tunisia. In this resolution, the Parliament set the conditions for the success of this agreement: it has to be asymmetric and progressive in essence. The negotiations have to be fully transparent and inclusive of civil society. We want the Tunisians to own this agreement. Complemented by the autonomous trade measures in favor of the olive oil sector - which employs one million persons in Tunisia - it will help to sustain the Tunisian economy, beyond words and discourses."
