EHFG 2011: Improving health care capacities encompasses more activities than curative health services

Public health capacities are at the core of efforts to affect an overall healthier European population. The subject was the topic of two sessions at the European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG).  Professor Helmut Brand spoke of the disparities in capacities among the nations of Europe, and some of the findings of a new in-depth analysis of how to improve systems.

Prof Kari Reijula, a pioneer of tobacco legislation in Finland, today called for a road map to a tobacco-free Europe. Speaking to the press today, Dr Marc Sprenger, head of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control in Stockholm, said Europeans’ failure to get at least 95% of their children vaccinated against measles had resulted in an epidemic in the EU which had also spread to North and Central America. Dr Sprenger urged “sometimes indolent” doctors to take responsibility and make sure children were vaccinated twice: “People may not trust politicians, but they do trust doctors and nurses.”

Nurturing good health was crucial to a well-run society and needed to be reflected in all aspects of public policy, Alojz Peterle MEP, former prime minister of Slovenia, told the European Health Forum Gastein.  But he was sceptical about the way “medical business” had been allowed to abuse health systems, wasting precious resources. “’Social innovation’ is really a fancy way of talking about using our common sense and people’s creativity,” Peterle said.

EHFG President Leiner: Finance to resolve crisis in nursing cares “should come from new EU transaction tax"

Nursing care in Europe faces a number of simultaneous crises, EHFG President Günther Leiner told the closing EHFG press conference today. While the demographic pyramid became ever more lopsided, there was a shortage of care staff to look after Europe’s ageing and ailing population. Nor were there enough resources to pay for such care, or – often – any guarantee that standards could be maintained. The proceeds of the transaction tax proposed by the European Commission could be used to fill the gap, he said.
