Copenhagen, 19 October 2011
Last week, over 100 experts and policy-makers from 42 countries and 7 partner organizations gathered in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss the prevention of cervical cancer in the WHO European Region. This cancer kills 30 000 women in Europe every year – a preventable and unacceptable cost to society. An effective vaccine now exists to protect women against human papillomavirus (HPV), the primary cause of cervical cancer, and effective screening programmes can trigger life-saving action before the disease starts.

Short Selling: tough EU standards on short selling. Markus Ferber MEP

Highly speculative financial market transactions in government bonds and credit-default swaps (CDS) will soon be contained throughout the EU. Negotiators of the European Parliament and the Council agreed on a new EU Regulation on short selling last night. "We have successfully fought for very strict conditions for short selling. Such restrictions are badly needed to contain destructive speculation", said Markus Ferber MEP who is in charge of the Regulation on short selling for the EPP Group.

EU energy infrastructure Backward-looking Commission proposals skewed in favour of gas pipes over renewable energy needs

The European Commission today presented legislative proposals on energy infrastructure, including financing rules in the context of the next EU budgetary period (1). While the Greens welcome that the Commission has put the question of energy infrastructure on the agenda, the group expressed concern that the proposals are skewed in favour of infrastructure for fossil fuels over renewable energies in terms of financial support and selection criteria, as well as over the transparency of the procedure.

EU transport networks Commission proposals fall short of ensuring sustainable transport projects

The European Commission today presented proposals on the future direction of European TEN-T transport networks. The Greens are concerned that the proposals will not ensure that large-scale transport network projects are consistent with the EU's sustainability, climate change and environmental goals. Commenting on the proposals, Green transport spokesperson Eva Lichtenberger said:

Project Bonds: EPP Group welcomes Commission proposal. Corien Wortmann-Kool MEP and Jean-Paul Gauzès MEP

The EPP Group has welcomed today's proposal by the European Commission on project bonds. Commissioner Olli Rehn has proposed launching a pilot phase to attract private capital financing infrastructure in the field of transport, energy and ICT infrastructure.

According to the EPP Group, project bonds will help to secure the required investment in European infrastructure. They will create sufficient confidence to attract more private financing, thereby serving as an important mechanism for maximum leverage of public spending.

Connecting Europe: funding for broadband networks must be accompanied by policies that ensure private investments in infrastructures

Brussels – The Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-2020 by the European Commission confirms the crucial importance of connecting infrastructures, and in particular high speed broadband networks, for Europe’s economy and society. However, the use public funding must be limited to remote areas, while forward looking policies need to be adopted to keep the sector investing in new broadband networks

Cable Europe reaction to Commission financing initiative for next generation access “Connecting Europe Facility”

“There is a case for state aid funding to make sure that the Digital Agenda avoids a Digital Divide. But we have a warning about how to use public funds. Keep them out of our territories. Not because we are scared to compete with other players - on the contrary. But because it kills the will for private investment if the market figures that the state will just pour money in if you wait around long enough. That is not going to help Europe's Digital Agenda.

EU food aid scheme Greens propose pragmatic solution to stand-off on EU food aid scheme

EU agriculture ministers are tomorrow set to decide on a proposal to wind down a scheme under the CAP, which provides for food aid to the most vulnerable persons in the EU. With the proposals deadlocked in Council, the Greens have sent a letter to the Polish EU presidency proposing a solution: continue the food aid until 2013 by complementing EU agricultural intervention stocks with food products purchased on the market.

ANEC Statement - Nanomaterials: a very small step on the long and bumpy road to consumer safety

After almost 12 months of waiting, ANEC welcomes the adoption of a regulatory definition of nanomaterials by the European Commission, albeit with mixed feelings. We welcome application of the approach according to which the size distribution of a material should be based on the number concentration (i.e. the number of particles), and not on the mass concentration of a nanomaterial product. This is because a small mass concentration may contain the largest number fraction1.
