ESIG celebrates 15 Years Anniversary and appoints new Chairman

Brussels, 17 November - The European Solvents Industry Group (ESIG) celebrated its 15th year anniversary event on 16 November at the Club Royal des Officiers du Regiment des Guides in Brussels.

Open internet: Commission must enshrine principle of net neutrality in EU law

The European Parliament today adopted a resolution calling on the Commission to do more to guarantee open internet and net neutrality. The Greens welcomed the vote and called on the Commission to come forward with legislation that enshrines the principle of net neutrality. After the vote, Green MEP Philippe Lamberts said:

The European Parliament today adopted a report outlining its opinion on planned EU nuclear research for the next two years 2012-13. The Greens believe the EU nuclear research programme should be limited to radioprotection (people and environment), decommissioning of nuclear installations and non-proliferation. The Greens also oppose spending more public money on research into nuclear fission and the ITER nuclear fusion project. Commenting on the vote and the proposals, Green nuclear spokesperson Michèle Rivasi said:

Antibiotic resistance: what is not measured, is not done. Surveillance to be strengthened throughout Europe

The two most common antibiotic-resistant bloodstream infections – methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and resistant Escherichia coli – caused 8215 excess deaths (5503 and 2712, respectively) in 31 European countries in 2007. They also accounted for more than 260 000 bloodstream infections, and over 370 000 extra days in hospital, at a cost of €62 million, according to a recent study (1). Less is known about these and other such infections in other countries the WHO European Region, where data are not reported to international surveillance systems.
