European Neighbourhood Policy: now is the time to act! Mário David MEP

Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE Leader today issued a stark warning to the EU following the weak statement by the High Representative, Catherine Ashton on the situation in Syria.  Following her remarks that the idea of creating humanitarian corridors  "has been dropped", Verhofstadt stated if the EU stands idly by - Homs will become the new Srebrenica.

What fruit juice are you drinking?

The European Parliament adopted today a report on a Fruit Juices Directive which aims to improve production standards, set rules for quality and labelling of fruit juices and help consumers make healthier choices.   Fruit juices sales are increasing in Europe, for example Europeans consume 300 million tons of orange juice every year, half of world consumption. But do we really know what are we drinking? Is it a real fruit juice or a juice made from concentrate or nectars?

Member States collectively spend about €200 billion a year on defence, which represents only about a third of the US defence budget alone. European countries are already incapable of carrying out military operations (example recent Libya intervention) without US support, whose share of all defence spending within NATO has risen to 75%. The European Parliament today adopted a Report in response to the uncoordinated defence budget cuts in recent years of the majority of EU Member States. The MEPs call for increased cooperation in the field of defence.

EU-Morocco fisheries agreement/Western Sahara - EP rejects shameful agreement; Commission must go back to drawing board

The European Parliament today voted not to give its consent to a controversial EU-Morocco fisheries agreement (1). The Greens warmly welcomed the outcome of the vote and called on the Commission to come forward with a revised proposal under which the waters of Western Sahara are excluded from the EU-Morocco fisheries agreement. After the vote, Green fisheries spokesperson Raül Romeva said:

EP calls for more pooling of defence policy costs

The European Parliament adopted today a report on the impact of the financial crisis on the defence sector in EU Member States.

The report is particularly timely as it comes at a moment when the Member States, forced by radical budgetary austerity measures, are looking into possible pooling and sharing initiatives to reduce costs, given the impact of the financial crisis on the defence sector.

GUE/NGL welcomes Mahmoud Abbas' raising of Palestinian flag at UNESCO

"Finally the Palestinian flag is hoisted among the flags of independent states," said GUE/NGL MEP Kyriacos Triantaphyllides, Vice-Chair of the EP's Palestinian Legisltive Council Delegation, following the raising of the Palestinian flag by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas outside UNESCO headquarters in Paris yesterday.
