Europe's biodiversity must be our generation's priority

The report “Our life insurance, our natural capital: a Biodiversity Strategy to 2020", drafted by Dutch Liberal Democrat MEP Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy (D66, Netherlands), defines concrete steps towards protecting biodiversity in the European Union and globally. The final report will be voted tomorrow in the European Parliament.

Brussels, 19 April 2012: Eurociett believes the EU Employment Package takes some bold steps in progressing on much needed labour market reforms in order to avoid a jobless recovery.   However it does not go far enough in recognising the essential role private employment services  have to play in reaching the EU2020 strategy targets.

EuroCommerce welcomes the Commission’s new plans for a “job-rich recovery”

EuroCommerce today welcomed the Commission’s new proposal¹ for a job-rich recovery in Europe. In particular, EuroCommerce applauded the Commission’s efforts to improve the implementation of flexicurity principles, tackle undeclared labour, address the mismatch in skills, and mobilise funds for job creation. The communication also addresses the underlying importance of promoting entrepreneurship, a fundamental aspect for the commerce sector.

EU Ministers must stop the flood of CO2 emissions allowances

The carbon price must be urgently boosted to fix the EU's Emissions Trading System and fight climate change. EU environment ministers discussed raising the carbon price in the ETS at their informal meeting in Horsens, Denmark today.

The carbon market is currently overflowing with spare emissions allowances due to the economic crisis, which has sent the carbon price down. The most effective way of pushing the price back up would be by avoiding too many allowances coming onto the market in the coming years.

Verhofstadt: PNR Agreement falls short of EU standards on data privacy

Today the main political groups in the European Parliament gave the green light to the EU-US agreement on the transfer of Passenger Name Records (PNR), despite the rapporteur Sophie in 't Veld (D66, Netherlands) recommending to withhold consent. 

Corporate tax - EP gives thumbs up to corporate tax base as step to ending tax arbitrage, reducing business costs

The European Parliament today voted to endorse legislative proposals for an EU common consolidated base for corporate tax (CCCTB). The Greens have long supported the introduction of a binding EU CCCTB and welcomed today's vote. After the vote, Green economic affairs spokesperson Philippe Lamberts said:

PNR - data protection Blow for EU citizens' civil liberties as hypocritical MEPs green light controversial EU-US PNR deal

The European Parliament today voted to give its consent to a controversial draft EU-US passenger data (PNR) agreement. The positive vote on the EU-US PNR deal, which came in spite of the fact that fundamental concerns previously outlined by the EP and European courts have not been addressed, will mean US authorities will be able to continue to retain private information about EU airline passengers (1). The Greens voted to reject the deal and hit out at the outcome with Green home affairs spokesperson Jan Philipp Albrecht (Germany) stating:

(Brussels - 19 April, 2012) The Cable Europe Labs Certification Board has announced that products from Cisco, Samsung and Technicolor have been certified and that a CMTS from Motorola has been granted a ‘verified for base feature set’ label following the release of testing results from Certification Wave 46.

The European Parliament is voting today on a proposal on energy taxation which by ending diesel subsidies would raise costs for consumers, according to the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Region I office which represents 36 million motorists via its 106 member clubs.
