Cyber Crime: European Parliament introduces common penal standards. Monika Hohlmeier MEP

Attacks on IT systems in the EU will be subject to minimum standards of penal law. The European Parliament adopted a new EU Directive today introducing mandatory prison sentences for major attacks, for example. "There are more than 800,000 attacks a day in the EU. It is indispensable to introduce joint minimum sentences as such attacks can have destructive effects on the public infrastructure and on companies likewise", said Monika Hohlmeier MEP who is the European Parliament Rapporteur.

EP calls on EU to improve access to care of vulnerable groups

The European Parliament today adopted a report by Green MEP Jean Lambert on access to care for vulnerable groups. With access to healthcare and other social support services threatened by budget cuts, the report uncovers important findings and proposes measures to improve the access to care, support services and healthcare of the most vulnerable in society. After the vote, Jean Lambert, member of the employment committee, said:

Resolution on MFF: vote result bodes badly for September MFF final negotiations

GUE/NGL MEPs have expressed their disappointment after a flawed resolution on the European Parliament's MFF position was voted through in plenary today.

Negotiations on free trade agreement with USA should be put on hold

On the eve of the vote on Parliament's resolution on the NSA spying scandal, Greens/EFA Co-Presidents Dany Cohn-Bendit and Rebecca Harms called for a clear signal against opening negotiations with the USA on a free trade agreement:

"The EU Trade Commissioner Karel de Gucht should not start negotiations with the US on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). The negotiations must be put on hold until the NSA affair has been fully and openly discussed.

Conservatives and Liberals block stronger investor protection

The European Parliament today voted to revise draft EU legislation on investment funds (the UCITS directive), a sector that is valued at almost €6.3 trillion. The legislation, which is being shepherded through the European Parliament by Green draftsperson/rapporteur Sven Giegold, also included provisions on remuneration and performance fees, which were both narrowly defeated during the voting. After the vote, Sven Giegold, Green finance spokesperson, stated:
