Caritas Europa meets France's Immigration Minister ahead of EU Presidency

Brussels, 16 June 2008 - As France prepares itself to chair the EU Presidency in less than a month, a delegation composed of representatives from Caritas Europa and national Caritas organisations of the next three EU Presidency countries (France, Czech Republic and Sweden) met Brice Hortefeux, France's Minister for Immigration, Integration, National Identity and Co-Development, at his cabinet in Paris on 9 June 2008.

WHO/Europe endorses the EU Mental Health Pact

The new EU Mental Health Pact was launched on 13 June at a high-level Mental Health Conference that was coorganized by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, the Slovenian EU Presidency and the European Comission, DG SANCO. The WHO Regional Director for Europe Marc Danzon joined the EU Health Commissioner A. Vassiliou, the Slovenian Health Minister Z. Mazej-Kukovic and the European Parliament Vice-President M.A.M. Martinez at the opening session of the conference that gathered all EU, and EU-realted and other European stakeholders working in the field of mental health.

EIM welcomes Council Conclusions on Multi-Annual Contracts

EIM, the association of European Rail Infrastructure Managers, welcomes the conclusions adopted last Friday by the Transport Council which encourage EU Member
States to adopt Multi-Annual Contracts with rail infrastructure managers. EIM believes such contracts are vital for ensuring the long term stability of rail infrastructure managers, allowing efficient planning for investment, maintenance and renewal of the
network, as well as driving forward improved quality of service for customers. However EIM is disappointed by the Council’s decision not to make such contracts mandatory.

EPP Disappointed with Irish Referendum Result - EPP Summit will Assess Treaty Impasse

The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Wilfried Martens, expressed this afternoon his disappointment with the negative result of the Irish referendum to approve the Lisbon Treaty.

“I respect the result, but I am very disappointed because it seems that most Irish citizens were poorly informed about the content of the Treaty and its importance for Ireland and Europe,” said the EPP President.
