Gabi Zimmer, chair of the GUE/NGL parliamentary group, today congratulated Nicolas Maduro on his clear victory in the presidential election in Venezuela.

The electoral system of Venezuela is internationally reputed as being optimal, and the move by the Venezuelan opposition to question the results is a disgrace.

"With this vote, the people of Venezuela have again made the right choice for the reinforcement of democracy, for social justice, for the genuine emancipation and integration of Latin America and the support of peace in a multi-polar world" said Gabi Zimmer.

"The impressive progress of social justice in Venezuela is inspiring the struggle of the European peoples against the intention of the Troika to impose more austerity on the poor and to deprive them of their basic and fundamental rights".
