White Paper on Perspectives of Existing and Future Spectrums for IMT
Shenzhen, China, 25 February, 2013: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced the release of a new wireless spectrum white paper. The white paper sets out Huawei’s vision and perspective for future development of mobile broadband and spectrum expansion for IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications). The paper concludes that at least 500 MHz of spectrum below 6GHz needs to be made available for IMT by 2020.
The societal and economic benefits of mobile have been proven and are now widely recognized. Triggered by the increasing requirements to communicate across a huge range of mobile terminals and applications, the mobile industry has grown rapidly, bringing direct benefits to people’s lives and to economic development. With the arrival of the mobile internet, user demand has boomed and with it demand for precious spectrum resource. How to manage spectrum responsibly and how to improve spectrum utilization are critical questions for governments, regulators, operators and vendors.
Huawei has performed in-depth spectrum analysis and measurement since the very early days of mobile broadband, across a large number of live networks around the world. In Huawei’s view, a minimum of 500 MHz of spectrum needs to be newly available for IMT at WRC-15 (2015 World Radiocommunication Conference) and should be identified mainly below 6GHz. In the white paper, Huawei also provides possible candidate band suggestions for IMT terrestrial component.
In addition to availability of future new spectrum, Huawei believes better and more efficient utilization of existing spectrum is critical to promote the development of the wireless industry. The proliferation of LTE bands should encourage the industry to consider a solution for LTE roaming from a spectrum point of view. Technical solutions should work towards spectrum harmonization. To this end, Huawei believes small cell is one important technology direction, with 3.5GHz identified as one important global harmonized band for small cell. Huawei provides a solution over the air for TDD synchronization issues among different operators.
