"The European Union is proud to have three Baltic States among us. They may be small in size, but they inspire us in our political action", said Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group, speaking yesterday at a conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the Baltic States' independence.
The Chairman of the biggest Group in the European Parliament emphasised the achievements of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in handling economic challenges: "In recent years, the Baltic states have been the example in the management of public finances, which, as we see today, has not been the case in all European countries."
"Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the countries where tradition is important, but where new technologies have also thrived", said Joseph Daul, highlighting their potential. "I am thinking of e-governance. Many EU states can learn from the modernity of these three states."
"More importantly, the three Baltic States are part of the European Union because they defend the values of freedom, solidarity and responsibility with great conviction. But I would also encourage political courage at a time when these values and ideals are too often forgotten or ignored," concluded Joseph Daul.
