Medication safety is a key element of any strategy to improve care delivered to patients. European cooperation in this field has proved to be useful.
The EUNetPaS project, co-financed by the EU Public Health Programme 2007, delivered excellent results with support at European, national and local levels as well as commitment of multi-professional teams. Medication safety was one of its four areas of work;

The activities led by HOPE gathered most EU Member States and several European stakeholders at the different steps of the work. Following a collection and selection of good practices reducing medication safety errors, a real structured transfer of competences was organized. On this basis, recommendations on medication safety and transferability of the good practices from one member state to another were adopted.

The implementation of good practices is a way not only to raise awareness but to improve significantly medication safety. “The EUNetPas project gave us the opportunity to reinforce the clinical pharmacy and medication safety in our hospital in the framework of a European project”, expressed an enthusiastic healthcare professional in one hospital of implementation. With 107 implementations carried out in hospitals of 11 Member States the project tripled expectations.
