• Members will be able to access the Meters and More protocol technology and help promote the process of standardizing communications systems across Europe.
• Meters and More is the technology selected by Enel and Endesa for 13 million smart meters to be installed in Spain from 2010 onwards.
Rome, April 30th 2010 - The first Board of Directors’ and General Meetings of the international non-profit Meters and More Association, legally incorporated under a Royal Decree of Belgium on March 9th 2010, were held in Brussels on April 27th 2010. The Association was established by Enel Distribuzione and Endesa Distribución Electrica to promote the protocol of the same name developed by Enel, which is based on new-generation Power Line Communication (PLC) technology.
Management roles at the Association were assigned as follows: Giuseppe Michele Salaris (Enel Distribuzione) was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors; Rocio Millan Navarro (Endesa Distribución Electrica) was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors; and Giacomo Gargano (Enel Distribuzione) was appointed General Manager of the Association.
The Association is now legally ready to receive membership applications from all interested parties. New members will have access to documentation on the Meters and More protocol, which is becoming an “open” communications protocol also in line with the communications systems’ standardization process launched at the European level.
The Association will further develop protocol specifications, certify compliance of new equipment with these specifications to ensure interoperability, and promote the protocol’s application throughout Europe.
Endesa will apply the Meters and More protocol to the new generation of smart meters that the utility will install at its 13 million Spanish customers starting this year. The Meters and More protocol is based on robust, reliable and efficient communications using dual-channel BPSK modulation, which makes it possible to install an advanced remote management system and enable future Smart Grid functionalities and value-added services.
Enel has consolidated experience in remotely-managed electronic meters. It is the only utility in the world to have installed over 32 million such meters on customer premises, adopting a variety of proprietary and third-party technologies.
Electronic meters allow the remote reading of power consumption and remote management of accounts, as well as monitoring the quality parameters of end customers’ power service.
