Copa and Cogeca today announce that a large demonstration of farmers from all EU countries will be held at the next meeting of the Agriculture Council on Monday, 22 June in Luxembourg.
Pekka Pesonen, Secretary General of Copa-Cogeca, said, “Food production is the single biggest economic activity in Europe and it is facing serious problems. Dairy in particular is in a very severe crisis, and other sectors, from pig meat and olive oil to sheep and goats are suffering, too.
Even as the causes of the problems differ, the result is always the same – we are not getting a fair share of the value of the final product.”
“We want to draw the public’s attention to how serious the situation is. We will therefore hold a large, pan-European demonstration with farmers from all EU Member States at the occasion of the Agricultural Council meeting in Luxembourg on 22 June. This demonstration will take place
from 1.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. outside the ministers’ meeting place. It will be preceded by a tractor procession from the centre of Luxembourg city at noon”, the Secretary General explained.
“Having sustainable food production in Europe is at least as vital as having a strong banking sector. We will come to Luxembourg to demand our ministers to help us weather the current, exceptional crisis”, Mr Pesonen concluded.
