New IEA report says policy makers should invest in CHP to achieve climate change targets

Date

24 Apr 2009

In identifying climate change abatement solutions the IEA launched its latest report on CHP at COGEN Europe’s Annual Conference in Brussels. The report carries the message that global commercial capacity to double CHP exists and
that governments should invest in CHP as part of their overall climate change strategy. Europe should be bolder in pursuing its CHP policy.

This report “Cogeneration and District Heating – Sustainable energy technologies for today … and tomorrow” was released at the COGEN Europe Annual Conference in Brussels on 21 April 2009. It assists policy makers who would like to implement cogeneration policies and
provides “best practice” policy approaches for energy, environmental, finance and local officials used by different countries to expand cogeneration. The report follows the 2008 IEA study on CHP as part of the IEA International CHP Collaborative effort.

The new report highlights that Europe is home to world leading examples of CHP economies like Finland and Denmark, where between 30% and 50% of total electricity generated is generated in CHP. As such, Europe is a global leader both in CHP and in having developed successful policy to promote it. The report concludes that cogeneration and district energy require focused, consistent government attention to address a variety of barriers that can prevent the realisation of their full potential.
