Brussels, 03 June 2025: FuelsEurope welcomes the strategic direction set by the ITRE Committee with the adoption of its motion for a resolution on the Clean Industrial Deal (CID). The committee’s clear recognition of alternative fuels within the CID framework sends a strong and timely message: Europe’s climate ambition must be anchored in industrial resilience and a technology-neutral approach to decarbonisation.

By acknowledging the vital role of alternative fuels, the ITRE resolution underlines the importance of maintaining a broad portfolio of solutions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This balanced approach is essential for energy-intensive industries like fuel manufacturing, where full electrification may not always be feasible. Innovative renewable and low-carbon fuel technologies stand ready to contribute to Europe's decarbonisation objectives while strengthening energy security and supply chain resilience.

The resolution lays out a robust and pragmatic roadmap for Europe’s industrial transition, calling for:

  • Technology neutrality, ensuring no viable solutions are prematurely excluded and aligning climate targets with strategic industrial and energy security needs.
  • Sector-specific pathways, reflecting the diverse technological and investment realities across Europe’s industrial ecosystems, including alternative fuels for transport decarbonisation.
  • A performance-based sustainability approach, recognising the carbon intensity of products rather than solely focusing on production methods.

Liana Gouta, Director General of FuelsEurope stated: “This resolution sends a clear political signal at a critical moment in the current legislative cycle: Europe’s industrial future must be built on technology neutrality and strategic autonomy. In the fuel manufacturing sector, the ambition of the EU’s climate neutrality goal for 2050 is shared and the solutions are ready. What we now need are the enabling conditions that will that will allow our industry to accelerating its transition towards climate neutrality.

FuelsEurope urges the European Parliament to build on this strong foundation by adopting the resolution in Plenary and reinforcing the European Commission’s and Member States’ shared commitment to turn ambition into concrete action.

The ambition is shared. The solutions are ready. Now is the time to provide the enabling conditions that will allow Europe’s fuel manufacturing industry to deliver.
