COGEN Europe, the European association for the promotion of cogeneration, is pleased to announce today that Uniper has joined the association as its latest member. Uniper is a global energy company that generates, trades, and markets energy on a large scale. The company has around 11,500 employees and is active in more than 40 countries. Under its new strategy, Uniper aims to turn its power generation portfolio in Europe carbon-neutral by 2035.

COGEN Europe Managing Director Hans Korteweg sees great opportunities in having Uniper on board: “Uniper and COGEN Europe share the same vision on how to create a resilient, decentralised and carbon-neutral European energy system by 2050. We are convinced that cogeneration will continue to bring great benefits to our energy system and will enable Europe to decarbonise in a cost-effective way. Uniper has built up great knowledge and expertise. Together, we will promote those benefits of cogeneration towards European policymakers and stakeholders.”

Mr. Korteweg continues: “With the European Green Deal gaining momentum, it is important that we ensure energy efficiency is a key element of all its different policy initiatives. We need to ramp up the deployment of renewable and energy efficient solutions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Europe now needs predictable and stable frameworks to drive investment and ensure a level-playing between the different decarbonising solutions, including cogeneration.”

Michael Frank, Director Sales & Product Development at Uniper Engineering, highlights the importance of joining COGEN in the midst of the European Green Deal’s discussions: “Combined heat and power (CHP) plants play an important role toward a carbon-neutral future and decentralised energy production. As part of our commitment to evolve the energy transition, we operate CHP plants, supply heat to more than 100.000 customers and offer future-proof CHP solutions for a reliable, sustainable, and embedded energy supply. We are thrilled to join COGEN Europe at a turning point for the energy sector, and together increase awareness of the many advantages of cogeneration on the EU scene, ahead of the publication of the ‘Fit for 55’ and ‘Hydrogen and Gas Markets Decarbonisation’ packages.
