GUE/NGL has the pleasure of announcing the inaugural award for 'Journalists, Whistleblowers and Defenders of the Right to Information' taking place on Tuesday 29th May 2018 at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Named in honour of the late Maltese journalist and whistleblower, Daphne Caruana Galizia, the award is for individuals or groups who have been intimidated and/or persecuted for uncovering the truth and exposing it to the public. The award aims to support and disseminate their work in an effort to safeguard and promote the freedom of press and the right to information – both of which are under threat around the world but also inside the European Union, which does not yet offer adequate legislative protection for such work.
The chosen winner will receive €5,000 for their work. You can find out more information on the criteria for the nominations here.
Nominations are open until 23h59 CET on 22nd April 2018 and can be submitted by email to guengl.press@europarl.europa.eu
A jury of journalists, whistleblowers and GUE/NGL MEPs will assess the nominations and announce the nominees on the 4th May 2018.
