Brian McEnery today becomes the elected President of the global professional body for accountants, ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), representing its 188,000 members around the world.

Speaking today Brian said of his appointment:

‘It is an honour to take up the role of President at ACCA, a professional body that has opportunity at its heart. When I was young, I was lucky enough to see my older brother of four years working his way through the ACCA Qualification. Watching him, I could see the benefits of the syllabus and it was where my passion for business was first ignited. That is why I want to spend my year as ACCA President inspiring as many young people as possible into accountancy.’

‘There's a phrase in Irish - ‘mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí’ or in English, 'praise the young and they will thrive'. I want this to be the motto of my year as President because I believe that young people just need an opportunity to succeed. My opportunity was ACCA, and by spreading the word, I hope I can offer that same opportunity to thousands more young people around the world.’

Brian graduated with ACCA in 1993, becoming a member in 1998 and a Fellow in 2003. He became actively involved in the local centre of ACCA in 1997 and has since been involved in his local Munster district network and Irish Region ACCA activities.

Brian was a member of ACCA’s International Assembly for three years and was elected to Council in 2006. Brian has been active on a number of ACCA’s standing committees, with a focus on Governance, where he was chair of Governance Committee, Chair of the Governance Design Task Force and then Chair of the newly formed Governance Design Committee.

Brian is a Partner with BDO Ireland, first joining the firm in 1995 and becoming a Partner in 2002. In 2003, Brian was one of the founding partners of a new office of Crowe Horwath and, in 2012, this office of Crowe Horwath merged again with BDO.

Brian is also a non-executive director of Ireland’s ‘bad bank’, the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) and is non-executive Chairman of Ireland’s health and social care regulator, the Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA).

Brian is actively involved in public affairs and is an enthusiastic golfer. He is married to Patricia Ryan.

Following elections, Leo Lee FCCA is ACCA’s deputy president and Robert Stenhouse vice president, joining Brian to form ACCA’s officer line-up for 2016 – 17.
