Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the decision of the European Commission to withdraw its initial proposal to limit free of charge roaming calls to 90 days per year.
 
S&D vice-president Kathleen Van Brempt said:
 
"When we negotiated with the Commission and the Council, the Parliament accepted to introduce measures to avoid any abuse in the use of roaming calls. However, we also made it clear that a time limit did not fit the concept of ‘fair use’ and we always opposed it.
 
"There are Erasmus students or travellers crossing borders in Europe for longer than three months, and we promised to deliver a system in which people could ‘roam-like-at-home’. We must keep our word."
 
S&D spokesperson on industry, Dan Nica MEP, said:
 
"There are plenty of other good possibilities to help operators to manage the new Roaming Regulation and to avoid abuse, which still respect what was negotiated with the Commission and the Council. We are looking forward to the new proposal from the Commission."
