On 23rd June, the European Parliament Plenary approved an own-initiative report on the Energy Efficiency Directive (PIEPER Report), calling the European Commission to include strong provisions on building renovation in its upcoming energy efficiency reviews in October.

After being approved in the ITRE Committee on 24th May, the PIEPER Report, an own-initiative report monitoring the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Directive, was approved in the European Parliament Plenary with 253 votes in favor, 193 votes against, and 46 abstentions.

We welcome the fact that the European Parliament has taken a robust position on energy renovation of buildings, ahead of the publication of the Commission’s legislative proposals in October”, stated Susanne DYRBOEL, President of EuroACE. Industry needs a clear signal, i.e. that actions to improve energy efficiency, in particular energy renovations of buildings, are an EU priority. Renovation is a true engine for local jobs and growth, especially in SMEs, that will ensure that the EU keeps a strong industrial base in the next decades.

The final version of the report particularly promotes energy efficiency in the buildings sector. Members of the European Parliament strongly supported the implementation of more solid national long-term renovation strategies, and recognised the specific role the public sector should play. “We are pleased to see the European Parliament calling on the Commission and Member States to work together in order for our building stock to become highly energy efficient (nZEB level) by 2050, said Adrian JOYCE, EuroACE Secretary General. Additionally, the European Parliament restated that a 40% binding energy efficiency target is the most cost-effective level to aim for by 2030.

Concerning the energy efficiency legislative proposals to be published in October, EuroACE calls on the European Commission to take into account the strong position on energy efficiency in buildings and building renovation that the European Parliament has shown today in Plenary.
