Following his meeting with British PM David Cameron, Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, made the following statement:
"It is an important week for the European Union. The question of Great Britain is on the table and for the moment, Donald Tusk's proposals are, in the EPP Group's view, a very good base for the upcoming discussions and decisions. The most important thing for the EPP Group is that we talk about a British deal over the next few days. We don’t want to open a debate on further requests from other Member States. We’re talking only about a British deal.
This is a very important condition for us in the upcoming discussions. For the EPP Group, I stress that we want to contribute to a positive outcome of the negotiations. We want a deal; Britain should stay in the EU. Enormous tasks lie ahead of Europe: the refugee crisis, economic stability in the South of Europe, the creation of new jobs. These should be the decisive arguments for Great Britain to stay. We need everyone on board to master these challenges.
