Improved safety with new rules on maximum weight and dimensions for trucks
With the upcoming shadows’ meetings on weights and dimensions for trucks and busses, FIA Region I calls on MEPs to make full use of the legislation’s potential to make large vehicles safer and more environmentally friendly. Due to the slow renewal rate for truck fleets, MEPs should aim for swift adoption and implementation of the proposal.
Concerning cab design, FIA Region I supports improving driver visibility and minimising the negative consequences in case of crash. These measures would to better protect vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. MEPs should consider making design elements that increase road safety mandatory.
Member States should remain totally free to allowin European Modular Systems (EMS or mega trucks) on their roads. Member States allowing EMS, should make sure these vehicles are equipped with the latest safety technologies. Their circulation should also be limited to roads with the correct infrastructure to support the size and weight of the vehicle. Current data shows that the legislation to ensure that these vehicles stay on permitted roads are not properly enforced due to a lack of surveillance and unclear understanding of which roads to patrol.
“This legislation offers great potential for safety improvements when it comes to cab design. MEPs should act swiftly to we can get safer and more fuel efficient models on the market as soon as possible,” said FIA Region I Director General, Jacob Bangsgaard.
