Governments and regulators around the world have been called on by a new global forum to champion and support small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) which have been struggling for investment and could be vulnerable even after the economy has recovered.

I-size: better protection of children’s lives

Younger children will be better protected when travelling by car following the adoption of a new regulation on child-restraint systems (CRS) by the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) Working Party on Secondary Safety (GRSP).

The new regulation (known as the “I-size Regulation”) is the response of experts in UNECE to criticisms of the existing regulation for child car-seats from both Member States and consumers. Work on the new regulation started in 2008.

Enshrining austerity will only deepen EU quagmire

European United Left / Nordic Green Left President Lothar Bisky today denounced the outcome of negotiations between EU leaders as a dangerous attempt to enforce extreme austerity by all means and defy democratic procedure.

"I deeply deplore that extreme austerity seems to be the only idea our state leaders have come up with in their struggle to solve the crisis. As much as I disagree with this approach, I insist that any measures must be transparently and democratically debated and decided on the basis of the Community method."

Launch of the World Report on Disability at the European Parliament

On 7th December 2011 the World Report on Disability was presented and discussed at a launch event in the European Parliament. Member of the European Disability Forum: -CBM- co organised the event. CBM’s Lars Bosselmann highlighted the crucial role the EU can play in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in international cooperation. EDF expressed his concern: "The current financial crisis has probably increased the data in Europe. 62% of persons with disabilities are among the poorest in Europe.”
