EU-Russia summit: EU must support calls of demonstrators for re-run of Duma elections

Ahead of tomorrow's EU-Russia summit and in the context of a European Parliament debate today on Russia, the Greens have called on the EU to support the calls of opposition demonstrators for a re-run of the disputed Duma elections. The European Parliament today approved the European Protection Order (EPO), a new legal instrument that will provide continuous protection of victims of violence when they move from one Member State to another.

"If a person has been granted protection through a protection order in one Member State and wishes to move to another, they can request a European Protection Order so that they can move securely around the EU", explained Teresa Jiménez-Becerril, the EPP Group MEP who drafted the proposal.

EU energy roadmap - Roadmap fails to plot path for secure, safe and sustainable energy future

EU home affairs ministers today gave the go-ahead to a controversial agreement between the EU and the US on passenger data retention (PNR), with the deal now set to be considered by the European Parliament (1). Regretting Parliament's passing of the 'single permit' as a threat to migrants' rights, German GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst said the new rules create sub-categories of migrants and establish an unacceptable bind between work and residence permits.

"The single application procedure for residence and work permits unacceptably links the residence permit to employment and will not provide third country nationals with the same rights as European citizens."

European protection order a positive step towards tackling gender-based violence

Welcoming the broad political and institutional efforts by all parties in the drafting of a positive directive on the European protection order, Swedish GUE/NGL MEP and Chair of Parliament's Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee, Mikael Gustafsson said the new provisions were "a further step towards a safer Europe for all citizens, but especially for women who make up a large majority of the victims".
