EU pledges to crackdown on double taxation

Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs committee last night approved a report by Olle Schmidt (Folkpartiet, Sweden) on the EU's Annual Tax report. The report focuses on the tax initiatives taken by the Commission during 2011 and on areas where further initiatives are necessary in order to improve the functioning of the Single market and to create a more competitive Europe. It focus on removing cross-border tax obstacles for EU citizens and businesses, as well as preventing tax fraud and increasing tax transparency.

MEPs write to Kazakh President over violence in Zhanaozen

Following an initiative of Irish GUE/NGL MEP Paul Murphy, 48 MEPs from 17 countries and 6 different political groups today sent a letter to the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, expressing concern about the violence used by state forces against striking oil workers, their supporters and families in the city of Zhanaozen in western Kazakhstan last Friday, 16 December.

WEEE Directive: ‘Yes’ to its objectives, ‘No’ to its instruments

EuroCommerce welcomes the trialogue agreement on WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) as a small step in the right direction towards more harmonisation, less bureaucracy and a better functioning internal market.

Yesterday, Parliament and Council struck an agreement on the recast of the WEEE Directive, which attempts to address some of the shortcomings of the current Directive. However, mandatory take-back of small volume WEEE by retailers is maintained.

Following the adoption today in the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) of the European Parliament of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) Report, EPP Group Rapporteur Sari Essayah MEP said that the SEPA is extremely important for Europe's Internal Market: "SEPA provides the basis for other development of Europe's Internal Market."

Public Services Providers express mixed feelings on the “SGI package”

Responding to the adoption by the European Commission (EC) of a range of proposals impacting public services, Ralf Resch, General Secretary of CEEP, declared "Our members  acknowledge the publication of the package with mixed feelings".  

CEEP welcomes the revision of state aid rules, but insists on further clarifications. The main focus is an adequate definition of the de minimis exemption. 

WHO Rome office closes at the end of 2011 - Work on environment and health continues from other European locations

The Rome office of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health is due to close at the end of December 2011. WHO’s work on environment and health in Europe remains a priority and is being consolidated in Bonn, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark. This will allow the WHO Regional Office for Europe to maintain and strengthen its technical capacities in this area for the benefit of the 53 Member States of the European Region.

ENISA has published the first EU report ever on cyber security challenges in the Maritime Sector. This principal analysis highlights essential key insights, as well as existing initiatives, as a baseline for cyber security. Finally, high-level recommendations are given for addressing these risks.
