Farmers squeezed by unsound agriculture and trade policies

Highlighting drastic squeezing of farmers' incomes, particularly for small-, medium-sized and family farms in today's European Parliament debate on farm input and food supply chains, Portuguese GUE/NGL MEP João Ferreira said problems such as greater concentration among large-scale producers and increasing speculation on the global food market required a total rethink of agricultural and trade policy and the single market.

The European Parliament will today push the European Commission to come forward with a coordinated EU strategy to halve food waste by 2025.

MEPs in Strasbourg will vote on a report to improve the efficiency of the food supply chain from the production stage to storage, processing, distribution, management and consumption. It is estimated that almost 50% of edible and healthy food gets wasted along the entire food supply chain each year.

Fiscal pact - bad medicine, crooked method

Speaking on the draft international agreement for a reinforced economic union, Danish GUE/NGL MEP Søren Søndergaard said the deal would fail to ensure stability in the Eurozone and will certainly not succeed in overcoming the EU's deep social, economic and political crisis.

A greater effort for E-waste recycling needed

Electrical and electronic waste is a major global environmental problem given our society's growing dependence on such goods and the high turnover rate as new products come to market. Although it is difficult to quantify e-waste, we do know that large amounts are ending up in places where processing occurs at a very unprofessional level. This raises concerns about resource efficiency and also the concerns of the dangers to humans and the environment. ALDE insists on high standards for collection, recycling, treatment and re-use of electronic waste (mobiles, computers, TVs).

Danish election promises fall flat in presidency programme

GUE/NGL MEP Søren Søndergaard called on Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt to heed the call for a genuine solution to the crisis rather than more austerity.
