ALDE calls for the EP to formally freeze contacts with the Russian Duma

Kristiina Ojuland (Reform Party, Estonia) ALDE Spokesperson on Russia today called for the European Parliament to formally freeze its contacts with the Russian State Duma until free and fair parliamentary elections have been held in Russia.    The last  Duma elections held on December 4 have been characterized as fraudulent  by international  watchdogs.

Developing countries lead the way in the global adoption of biotech crops

Globally, it is clear that since the first commercial planting in 1996, biotech crops have become an integral part of farming’s present and future, and developing countries are now leading the way.  In 2011, developing countries adopted biotech crops at twice the rate of developed countries. Moreover, approximately 50 per cent of biotech crops are now grown in developing countries, the latest annual report from the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) revealed today.

In 2012, a two-week cold wave across Europe can generate fears of energy shortfalls and sheds lights on the scale of the energy poverty problem. This comes only a little more than a year after the December 2010 cold wave, which had caused similar concerns with a new peak in energy consumption being reached. Without a drastic change to Europe’s energy policy, these situations will more likely repeat in the coming years.
