(Brussels, 22 March 2012) On the occasion of the United Nation’s annual World Water Day on March 22, Europe’s food and drink operators have reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a more sustainable use of water throughout the supply chain for their products.  With a demand for water expected to rise 25% by 2025 worldwide, addressing water scarcity is a key global priority.

World Water Day 2012: ‘Water and food security’ Why we must produce more food with less water

“The world is thirsty because we are hungry,” notes the United Nations on World Water Day.  The world’s population reached 7 billion in 2011, and it is predicted to rise to at least 9 billion by 2050. More people living on our planet will require a more efficient use of dwindling natural resources, particularly water.

Call to the EU to inform European citizens about their new agenda setting right

Save water with wind power

The power sector is the one of the world's biggest consumers of water, but one source - wind power - uses very little water to produce electricity.  All fossil fuels and nuclear need significant quantities of water to pump crude oil out of the ground, remove pollutants from power plant exhausts, flush residues after fossil fuels are burned and cool power plants.

Wervel reminds European Parliament of protein deficit

The proposal of the European Commission to reform the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) unfortunately left the problem of the European protein deficit totally unaddressed. Wervel therefore took the initiative to remind the European Parliament (EP) of their resolution of February 2011 in which they raised the problem. Together with a symbolic bag of local peas, a letter was handed over to the members and chairman of the agriculture committee in the EP.
