Fondation EurActiv: new name and upgrade to public service status

Eight years after its establishment Fondation EurActiv became a public service foundation, dedicated to hosting and training independent media, by Royal Decree of 29 March 2012 and published in the Official Gazette of Belgium on 16 April. Its official name has changed to "Fondation EurActiv Politech" in recognition of the integration of Politech Institute AISBL from 01/01/2011 – see link.

Voerdal aluminium smelter closure announcement indicates creeping process of EU deindustrialisation

Eurometaux regrets the recent closure announcement of the German Aluminium smelter Voerdal. It is another sad indicator of what is happening to the European industrial basis and high quality jobs when the costly unilateral European energy & climate policies are not improved to a global level playing field, and it is worsening the on-going crisis in Europe.

Bad Hofgastein, May 10, 2012 – The European Health Forum Gastein is preparing for its 15th annual conference. The theme for 2012 could hardly be more topical. After decades of rising prosperity, the spectre over Europe is of a continuing financial crisis which threatens every aspect of people's lives. And a sector particularly affected by austerity matters is public health – representing 10% of GDP in the EU, and providing one of the largest sources of employment.

Biopatents - EP sends strong message on need to respect European law and end patenting of life forms

The European Parliament today adopted a resolution calling on the European Patent Office and the European Commission to ensure European legislation prohibiting the patenting of plant or animal breeding is respected. Speaking after the vote, Green MEP and agriculture spokesperson Martin Häusling said:

"MEPs have today sent a clear and strong message to the European Patent Office on the need for it to respect European law and end the patenting of life forms.

"In times of economic crisis, when austerity is being called for in the Member States, it is particularly important that the EU uses its resources carefully and minimises waste and fraud", said Christofer Fjellner MEP responsible for the Report on the discharge of the Commission budget for 2010.

"The European Parliament has granted discharge to the Commission, but not unconditionally. We have demanded better management and control of the financial engineering instruments and tougher use of sanctions for Member States mismanaging EU funds."

The IRU has published a manual for bus and coach operators, providing them with useful information before the 1 March 2013 deadline, regarding their obligations to passengers and aiming to promote increased service quality within the sector.

ETNO calls for a sustainable model of Internet development and for a level playing field in the Internet value chain

Consumer benefits significant – use Smart Meters

09 May 2012 – Brussels – The European Smart Metering Industry Group (ESMIG) believes that consumer awareness and involvement are key elements for the Smart Meter roll-out over the coming years to be successful, as consumer benefits in terms of energy and consumer savings will be significant. 

This was pointed out yesterday at a day-long workshop and showcase exhibition, which demonstrated and explained the benefits of Smart Metering technology. The event took place at the Scotland House Conference Centre, Brussels.
