President Barack Obama officially announced, on 12 February, at his annual “State of the Union” address the launch of negotiations for an EU-US free trade
agreement (FTA). His announcement is an important attempt to increase EU-US trade, investments and regulatory convergence leading to a much-needed boost in economic growth, international competitiveness and job creation, on both sides of the Atlantic.

"CLEPA fully welcomes President Obama's intention to launch a comprehensive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the EU” said Mr Jean Marc Gales, CLEPA CEO.

Economic crisis is not over - worst is still to come, claims Caritas Europa

The prioritisation by the EU and its Member States of economic policies at the expense of social policies during the current crisis is having a devastating impact on people - especially in the five countries worst affected - according to a new study published today by Caritas Europa. The report finds that the failure of the EU and its Member States to provide concrete support on the scale required to assist those experiencing difficulties, to protect essential public services and create employment is likely to prolong the crisis.

Portuguese GUE/NGL MEP Marisa Matias is leading an official European Parliament 5-day MEP delegation to Lebanon.

The MEPs, who arrived in Lebanon on 11 February and will stay until 15 February, have a packed agenda which sees them meet Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and President Michel Sleiman as well as Lebanese and international NGOs and Lebanese politicians including Kataeb Party President Amine Gemayel and Parliamentary Leader of Hezbollah Mohamad Raad.
