Air passenger rights

THE GREENS/EUROPEAN FREE ALLIANCE

The European Commission today presented a communication outlining plans to review EU rules on air passenger rights. Commenting on the plans, Green transport spokesperson Keith Taylor (MEP, UK), who was draftsman for the European Parliament on air passenger rights, said:

"There is a clear need to clarify EU rules on air passenger rights, notably to ensure the rights of consumers are not compromised. However, using this review to soften EU rules on air passenger rights is clearly a totally wrongheaded approach.

Parliament sends clear signal to Council by rejecting conclusions on MFF

Speaking after a resolution rejecting the European Council's recent conclusions on the Multiannual Financial Framework was adopted in plenary, GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer welcomed the outcome:

"My group rejected the MFF in its current form and this sends a clear signal to Council that they must respect Parliament's co-decision powers. Another reason the GUE/NGL stuck firmly to our rejection was that it was unclear where the funding would actually be coming from to meet the aims of tackling youth unemployment and growth and jobs."

The European Parliament today adopted a resolution outlining its position in response to the agreement at last month's EU summit by EU governments on Council's position on the next EU multiannual financial framework (2014-20). The Greens supported the resolution adopted today, which rejected the position adopted by Council, and stressed that the European Parliament must remain strong and defend a future-oriented EU budget. Commenting after the vote, Greens/EFA co-president Dany Cohn-Bendit said:

The plant supplies both electricity and heat locally and will be of a revolutionary design resulting in very high efficiency. “The new CHP power plant in Lausward (Düsseldorf), starting commercial operation in 2016, will be a landmark for future power generation in Germany and beyond and emphasizes the role of CHP combined cycle power plants as an engine of the energy system transition" said Lothar Balling from Siemens (1).

GUE/NGL condemns Parliament's green light to further liberalisation and austerity

Following today's plenary vote on the two Regulations that make up the so-called 'Two Pack' which saw a majority of MEPs give their green light to this latest round of EU economic governance legislation, GUE/NGL MEPs Marisa Matias and Nikos Chountis described the vote as a further intensification of austerity measures that are detrimental to promoting growth, investment and employment.

The European Parliament today adopted a final agreement on key legislative proposals aimed at further strengthening economic governance in the Eurozone. The Greens welcomed the legal provisions increasing democratic oversight over countries under assistance as well as the commitment by the Commission to outline proposals on further steps towards the mutual issuance of sovereign debt under specific conditions and proactive measures on public investments. Commenting on the outcome, Green economic affairs spokesperson Philippe Lamberts (MEP, Belgium) said:

"Consumers and traders, especially the smaller ones, feel insecure when carrying out cross-border transactions online. It is therefore crucial to ensure that there are effective tools which will allow them to resolve disputes in a fast, cheap and fair way. These new instruments will give them confidence in buying and selling throughout the EU and allow them to fully benefit from all the opportunities that the Single Market offers" said the European Parliament's Rapporteur for the Online Dispute Resolution Regulation, Róża Thun MEP.

The European Parliament today adopted two important legislative reports on how greenhouse gas emissions are accounted for and reported in the EU. The Greens gave a general welcome to the outcome, whilst regretting that rules on how forest and land emissions are accounted were not more ambitious.
