Skopje crowned best 2013 city for group tourism

Kortrijk – The IRU City Trophy 2013 was awarded today to the city of Skopje, the capital of the FYR of Macedonia, for its overall ambitious policy to promote group tourism by coach as an integral part of the city’s public transport system.

Council President van Rompuy: Building efficiency measure can create two million jobs

“Buildings represent the greatest potential sector for energy savings in the European Union”, Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, told the participants of the Renovate Europe Day in a video address. He also stressed that “deep renovation of existing buildings has the potential to stimulate innovation, to improve health and to create about two million new direct jobs in the Union by 2020”. Finally, van Rompuy stressed that “energy efficiency in buildings is not a cost but an investment with a great rate of return”.

European Parliament urges the EU to fight caste discrimination

The elected representatives of half a billion Europeans from 28 countries in the European Parliament (EP) today adopted a strongly worded resolution on caste discrimination.
Copenhagen (IDSN)/10 October 2013 – The European Parliament has sent a strong message of support to hundreds of millions of people all over the world who are subjected to caste discrimination by urging the EU to step up efforts to address a human rights issue that causes almost unimaginable suffering.

On the occasion of the European Commission’s President José Manuel Barroso’s visit to Lampedusa today, Caritas Europa’s Executive Board urges EU Member States to protect people in need while “protecting” national borders. The current EU and international legal framework, although not perfect, gives the EU and its Member States the instruments to prevent tragedies such as in Lampedusa last week, but the political courage is lacking.

Plenary supports Commission proposal that makes flying a lot more dangerous

MEPs who voted to back Commission plans on new unsafe requirements and procedures on cabin crew working time have shown an astonishing lack of dignity today.

But one third of MEPs sent a strong signal to the Commission by backing the GUE/NGL Resolution calling to reject the Commission blueprint.

218 MEPs voted in support of the motion for rejecting the flawed Commission proposal but unfortunately 387 MEPs voted against this motion for rejection.

Eurometaux Position on the proposed amendments to the Waste Shipment Regulation “Need for ambitious measures to fight against the estimated 25% of illegal shipments of waste”

Eurometaux welcomes the proposed amendments to the Waste Shipment Regulation which address the important and challenging problem of illegal shipments of valuable material embedded in waste and end-of-life products outside the EU. The amendments point to the right problems and propose useful measures. However, Eurometaux believes that the amendments are not ambitious enough and should go further so as to significantly reduce the estimated 25% of illegal shipments.
