Member states attempt to blackmail European Parliament in budget negotiations

"We will not be blackmailed by the member state governments!" GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer said, condemning the European Council's approach to the EU amending budgets for 2013 and 2014 as well as the EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2014-2020. 

MEPs back strict EU data protection rules

 

GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst has welcomed a key vote on new legislative proposals to overhaul EU data protection rules.

 

The European Parliament's civil liberties committee today approved EU rules on data protection that safeguard EU citizens' fundamental rights despite a massive lobbying campaign by big business. Based on this vote, Parliament can now enter into negotiations with Council.

 

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights must be defended!

GUE/NGL MEPs have voiced their support for a report that seeks to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU, ahead of a crucial plenary vote on the issue to be held tomorrow morning.

The group also calls on MEPs to reject anti-abortion group's calls for the dossier to be scrapped.

New Eurofound report evaluates potential impact of a coordinated EU minimum wage policy

(DUBLIN, IRELAND): Although minimum wages are set at national level and the EU has no competences on this matter, there is an on-going debate about the possibility of coordinating minimum wage policy across Member States, for instance by setting a common threshold of 60% of the median wage in each country. In the majority of EU Member States, minimum wages are set by government regulation. Germany together with Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Sweden are the exceptions. In these countries minimum wages are set by collective bargaining agreements.

ETNO is hosting its first workshop at the Internet Governance Forum [IGF] in Bali, Indonesia. This year’s IGF is expected to be attended by approximately 1,500 participants from civil society, the private sector, the technical community and Government representatives. The objective of each IGF programme is to facilitate an open and inclusive dialogue and exchange of ideas on key issues relevant to the Internet governance world. COGEN Europe acknowledges positive mention of Energy Efficiency and of cogeneration in particular in European Parliament draft report

The draft European Parliament report on a 2030 framework for climate and energy policies, produced jointly by the ENVI (environment, public health and food safety) and ITRE (industry, research and energy) committees, rightly acknowledges the future role of energy-efficiency policies in the 2030 climate and energy framework but falls short of devising any concrete path towards putting in place this framework.
