GUE/NGL MEP lambasts incompetent European Semester approach

Ahead of this afternoon's votes, GUE/NGL MEP Marisa Matias calls on the European Parliament to reject a report on the European Semester that pushes the same old austerity agenda.

"What has been done so far corresponds to the prevailing vision of how to respond to the crisis which has been a complete failure," said the MEP in a plenary debate this morning. "Empty words are being bandied about while austerity continues to destroy economies. This report only draws ambiguous conclusions."

"Today we send a message for the suspension of the EU-US TFTP agreement in a resolution that includes the GUE/NGL position and reflects what we've been saying from day one" he said after the vote.

Patients lose out in disappointing medical devices vote

GUE/NGL MEP Alda Sousa has expressed her dissatisfaction following the voting behaviour of the majority of MEPs in the European Parliament which saw them reject measures seeking to enhance the safety of medical devices and ensure that member states apply existing EU safety rules consistently.

Alda Sousa commented: "The voting behaviour of the majority in Parliament has overturned important amendments that were achieved in the Environment Committee last month, but all is not lost."

New rules on ship recycling "not enough" to stop dangerous scrapping

New legislation on the scrapping of old EU registered ships voted through by MEPs today will not ensure an end to risky and polluting practices.

"This Regulation is lacking. For ship-owners it has always been the case that it is financially more interesting to ‘recycle’ ships in places where sound environmental and health safety standards are not respected. This Regulation will not solve the problem as there are no provisions for incentivising ship-owners to follow sound ship recycling practices," said GUE/NGL MEP Sabine Wils after the vote.
