MEPs back Girling plan for tackling aviation carbon emissions

Commercial flights in and out of Europe will continue to be exempt from the EU's carbon emission controls, heading off a potential confrontation with the airline industry.

MEPs today approved a report by ECR Environment Co-ordinator Julie Girling which extends the exemption until 2021, when the International Civil Aviation Authority is due to introduce a global carbon offsetting scheme for the sector, capping emissions at 2020 levels.

In the meantime the EU's aviation Emissions Trading Scheme will continue to cover only internal EU flights.

ECR leaders reject Juncker's federalist ambition

Following today’s State of the Union address by European Commission President Jean Claude Junker, the ECR Group Co-Chairmen Syed Kamall and Ryszard Legutko have both argued that the EU must urgently change its current direction and have rejected the federalist ambitions contained throughout the speech.

Speaking at the start of the debate, Dr. Kamall said:

EU can set better forest-management standards to tackle climate change, say S&Ds

Forests are the lungs of Europe, covering 42% of the EU land surface, and they can play a crucial role in fighting climate change. This is why today the European Parliament voted on a report to include greenhouse gas emissions and removals from land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) in the 2030 climate and energy framework*.

S&D Group secures €500 million to tackle youth unemployment

The European Parliament today backed an S&D Group initiative to make an extra 500 million Euro available to tackle youth unemployment across Europe. The money comes as part of an amendment to the EU’s budget for 2017, increasing funding for the Youth Employment Initiative.

S&D Group MEP and Parliament negotiator for the amending budget Jens Geier said:

We expect non-EU airlines to contribute to the fight against climate change, including the UK, say S&Ds

Aviation emissions account for about 3% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions and are one of the fastest growing sources of CO2. The European Union tried to reduce the emissions by including the aviation sector under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). However, only intra-EU flights are included and this leaves a worrisome question mark about both international flights and what will happen with UK in the case of a hard Brexit.

PES president: Europe is running out of chances to deliver for its citizens

Sergei Stanishev, president of the Party of European Socialists, welcomed President Juncker's commitment to European solidarity and democracy in today’s State of the Union address - but highlighted the lack of significant progress in protecting social rights.

Mr Stanishev said:

"President Juncker was right to speak of unity and solidarity as a major source of strength for the European Union. We are a Union of south and north, west and east, and we can only face the challenges of the 21st century when we stand together.

Latin America and the EU must be key allies in the new international scenario, says S&D MEP Javi López

Latin America and the Caribbean is a crucial partner of the European Union, and this is why the European Parliament will vote tomorrow on a report which calls for further strengthening of our co-operation with the region.

S&D MEP Javi López, who is the author of the report, said:
