Brussels, 28 November 2017

On the eve of the African Union and European Summit, a strong S&D delegation took part in Abidjan at the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) and the European Parliament Summit, which adopted today an appeal to reaffirm the importance of the role of national and transnational parliaments, as well as of the parliamentary assemblies, in the democratic process and a renewed co-operation between EU and Africa.

Energy efficiency is the key to a new European economic and social model, say S&Ds

Brussels, 28 November 2017

Using phosphates in frozen meat misleads consumers and endangers their health, say S&Ds

Brussels, 28 November 2017

Today phosphate is being used to increase the weight of meat, due to its water-binding properties, mainly in frozen vertical meat spits, such as doner kebabs. Since this meat is not consumed at home, this meat is not labelled and consumers are not informed. It is misleading consumers by selling water for the price of meat.

Brussels, 28 November 2017

Following lengthy negotiations, the S&D Group in the European Parliament secured cross-party support for a binding target of 35% share of energy coming from renewable sources by 2030. The S&D author of the parliamentary report, José Blanco MEP, succeeded in uniting the Parliament behind a strong shift-up from the 27% proposed by the European Commission.

Traceability of tobacco will contribute to health and undermine smuggling, say S&Ds

Brussels, 28 November 2017

Today Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament voted to urgently introduce an independent traceability system for tobacco products. Some members of the parliamentary committee on health and environment had introduced an objection that would have delayed the adoption of the traceability system, thus again benefiting the tobacco industry. The S&Ds want to guarantee full implementation by 2019.

It’s disgraceful that member states turn a deaf ear to citizens on glyphosate, say S&Ds

Brussels, 27 November 2017

The Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament today strongly criticised the decision by member states to extend the licence of glyphosate, a pesticide which the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer considers “likely carcinogenic to humans.”
The S&D Group strongly backed the demand by the European Parliament to just phase out glyphosate instead of renewing its licence.
