PES approves Article 7 trigger, calls on Poland to respect fundamental values

The Party of European Socialists approves of the European Commission's decision to trigger Article 7 of the EU treaties, in response to the violations of the rule of law and the separation of powers by the government and president of Poland.

The PES believes this to be a proportionate measure, after a long period of warnings and of non-cooperation by the Polish authorities.

Following the decision of the European Commission to trigger Article 7.1 of the EU treaties in response to violations of the rule of law and the separation of power in Poland, S&D Group President Gianni Pittella said:

S&D Euro MPs today welcomed the Commission’s legislative proposals to make it easier for companies, especially SMEs, to sell their products across Europe, and to strengthen controls by national authorities and customs officers to prevent unsafe products from being sold to European consumers.
