Kathleen Van Brempt on the Monkeygate: It is time for the Commission to act and show car makers that they are not untouchable

At the request of the Socialists and Democrats, the European Parliament will discuss tonight the manipulation of scientific research by multinationals in the wake of the emission tests on monkeys and humans by German car makers.
 
S&D vice-president for sustainability Kathleen Van Brempt, who was also the chair of the parliamentary inquiry committee into emission measurements in the automotive sector (EMIS), said:
 

Zero tolerance for female genital mutilation, say S&Ds

 
Speaking ahead of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, 6 February, on which the European Parliament has tabled an oral question to the European Commission requesting a progress report on the issue, Iratxe García Pérez, S&D MEP and spokesperson on women’s issues said:
 
“Every day, 6000 girls fall victim to the horrible practice of genital mutilation with nearly a quarter of them under the age of 14. This barbarian practice is known to cause lifelong physical and psychological pain. 

Gas Storage Europe (GSE) members re-elect Lubor Veleba as their President

The Plenary of Gas Storage Europe (GSE) re-elected Lubor Veleba as GSE President for a second term of two years. Lubor Veleba has been member of the GSE ExCom since 2005 and GIE Board member from 2011.

In addition, GSE Plenary re-elected GSE ExCom members: Cécile Prévieu (Storengy, France), René Zwanepol (TAQA, The Netherlands) and László Fritsch (Hungarian Gas Storage, Hungary).

S&Ds: An historic moment for FYR Macedonia and for the Balkans

Following a visit of S&D Group to FYR Macedonia, MEPs were encouraged by the situation in the country and call on all political forces to work together and seize this historic moment. 2018 is an important year for the Western Balkans, with the Commission presenting its Strategy Paper for the region next week in Strasbourg and the annual enlargement package in April, alongside this a high level EU-Western Balkans summit will be held in Sofia in May, and consecutive EU Council presidencies are prioritising the region.

S&Ds welcome the EU’s decision to support Palestinians

S&D members welcome the new assistance package of 42,5 million euros for Palestine, announced by the European Commission.

S&D Group vice-president Elena Valenciano MEP said:

“While the Trump administration is playing with fire in the Middle East without offering any new hope for peace, Palestinians need our solidarity and support more than ever. This is true in East Jerusalem in particular, where local Palestinians are facing rapidly deteriorating conditions and isolation.
