Success on the horizon for posted workers reform

EU lawmakers have reached agreement on reforming the rules for posted workers in Europe -- putting one of the PES's major policy priorities within reach for the first time.

Negotiations between the European Parliament, the European Commission and national governments agreed last night on new rules to guarantee equal pay and rights for equal work at the same location.

The European Parliament, the Bulgarian Presidency and the Commission reached a common understanding on the introduction of equal pay for equal work in the same place for workers temporarily posted in another EU country. For many years, the Socialists and Democrats led the fight to revise the Posting of Workers Directive to better protect posted workers from day one and to ensure fair conditions and fair competition on the European labour market. The results of the negotiations will now be presented to the Council and the European Parliament.  
 

Alcohol should also have labelling on ingredients and nutritional values

At a plenary vote to update the 2008 EU Spirits Regulation, Socialists and Democrats called for an end to the exemption of spirit drinks from the Food Information Regulation, so that they are also properly labelled in terms of ingredients and nutritional values.
 
In the updated regulation, the European Commission had tried to open the door to changing the definition of what constitutes certain drinks like rum, whisky or vodka, but the Parliament rejected giving that competence to the Commission.
 

S&Ds push for tough rules on middlemen involved in aggressive tax planning

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament today led a majority on measures that would make lawyers, banks or counsellors accountable for the schemes offered to their rich clients to cut down their tax bills.

Closing the gender pay gap 2018: Focusing on pensions

PES Women launches its 2018 Gender Pay Gap campaign today (28 February), on European Equal Pay Day.

Equal Pay Day is the day each year in spring until which women would have to work to earn the same as their male colleagues in the previous year.

This year's focus is on the pension gap. The gap between the amounts women and men receive when they retire is 39%.
