Parliament backs overhaul of how EU is funded - with more money for young people and tackling climate change. Fake pro-Europeans instead abstain

The European Parliament today backed an ambitious reform of how the EU is financed. The Parliament voted on two joint reports, one on Parliament’s vision for the next multiannual financial framework (MFF) and one calling for new means of raising genuine own resources for the EU budget, instead of relying on annual contributions from member states.

S&D vice-president Isabelle Thomas MEP, co-author of the Parliament’s report on the next MFF, said:

S&Ds pressure member states to raise wages and boost public investment

The Socialists and Democrats today received the backing of the European Parliament for their call for wage increases, boosts in public investment and combatting inequalities. The 2018 European Semester has to be the opportunity to apply an economic policy which ensures growth, investment and full employment.

Hugues Bayet, S&D MEP and author of a parliamentary report on the European Semester 2018, said:

S&D Euro MPs rejected Luis de Guindos for ECB and urged eurozone leaders for more transparency in the selection process

The Socialists and Democrats rejected the appointment of Luis de Guindos as European central bank’s vice-president during a vote taking place today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. For several reasons, the S&D Euro MPs were never convinced with the current Spanish finance minister’s candidacy.

S&Ds warn of tit-for-tat escalation between EU and US, as trade war has no winners

The Socialists and Democrats strongly condemned US President Trump’s decision to impose heavy tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, at a plenary debate in the European Parliament this morning. They urged the Commission and member states to stand firm but not fall into the trap of a tit-for-tat escalation leading to a trade war.

S&D Group spokesperson for EU-USA trade relationships and chair of the European parliament’s trade committee, Bernd Lange, said:

PES: Social fairness package fails to live up to promises

The long-awaited social fairness package published by the European Commission today falls short of what was promised in several key respects, the Party of European Socialists warns.

The PES welcomes the fact that social concerns are back on the agenda -- and especially the proposal on the European Labour Authority, although this requires further scrutiny.
But it is highly regrettable that concrete legislative proposals on access to social protection and a social security number are not part of the package.

The S&Ds demand immediate ceasefire throughout Syria

As unspeakable horrors continue to take place in Eastern Ghouta and other parts of Syria, the S&D Group has pushed the European Parliament to hold a new debate on Syria. In the resolution that will be adopted on Thursday the S&Ds demand that the Assad regime and its allies stop shelling civilians.  A ceasefire must be immediately implemented throughout the country that has been plagued in the civil war already for seven years. The S&Ds also call for the EU member states and the international community to step up their contributions to refugee hosting countries.

Full access to social protection for all and a punchy European Labour Authority to protect workers’ rights, demand S&Ds

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome today the Commission’s Package for Social Fairness and proposal for a European Labour Authority, for whom the S&Ds have headed calls since 2013. The push for social protection for all and a European Labour Authority is part of a broader progressive campaign for a Social Europe.

Maria João Rodrigues, acting S&D Group leader and European Parliament rapporteur on the social pillar, said on the Commission proposal for social protection:

Finally some good news from member states on tax. Rules to bolster EU tax transparency are progress, say S&Ds

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament today welcome EU finance ministers’ decisions to strengthen tax transparency.
